Eating the Universe. Food in Art
Eat Art in an institutionalised form has its origins in Düsseldorf. In 1970 Daniel Spoerri chose Burgplatz as the location for his Eat Art Gallery, where famous artists from Dieter Roth to Joseph Beuys and Roy Lichtenstein exhibited artworks made from food. The Eating the Universe exhibition — which takes its title from a phrase coined in the 1970s by Peter Kubelka, a former professor for film and cookery at the Frankfurt Städelschule, to describe a TV show about cooking as an art form — uses the Eat Art Gallery's activities as a starting point for documenting how food has been used in art from the 1970s to the present day. It shows how artists have applied Eat Art techniques and material aesthetics to deal with issues such as identity formation through eating habits, modern dietary and nutritional advice, cookery programmes, and to offer criticism of consumerism and globalisation. After Düsseldorf, Eating the Universe will appear in the Galerie im Taxispalais in Innsbruck from April to June 2010, and in the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart from September 2010 to January 2011.
