Press Releases - ISM GALLERY

SALUTE

Opening reception, Saturday, November 10, 2007, 7pm – 11pm

‘ISM GALLERY
167B NW 23 Street
Miami, FL 33127

Nestor Arenas’s latest project will be on view along with Angel Vapor’s work at ‘ISM GALLERY’s grand opening show in Wynwood at this Saturday’s artwalk.

Arenas and Vapor approach a similar subject with completely different styles and mediums. Nestor’s soldiers are transformed in Angel’s pen studies from toys to icons. And while Nestor takes digital images of his unique and surreal model world, Angel’s style is classical and heavy. Nonetheless, Angel’s soldiers evoke associations of an enemy, his firefighters of fires and other disasters. And we find disaster, fires, and the enemy in Nestor’s landscapes.

Nestor’s enigmatic work is rife with ambiguity. It is like child’s play which is of no consequence, yet it speaks of sinister and immutable threats. He’s both irreverent and dead serious. The new project portrays human tragedy but without the short-sightedness of sentimentality: we’re shocked with a plane-wreck suggestive of the downed AA flight; yet our perspective is grand and detached.

Angel’s drawings and sculptures are sincere studies of men burdened with the terrible business of life. His figures as well as his portraits often convey a compelling sense of bewilderment. His work is also, well, simply beautiful.
