CARRIE MARILL and MATTHEW MOORE as a part of the CO Art Ranch

Opening Reception Friday, May 2 from 5 -8 pm

Carrie Marill was born in 1976 in San Francisco, CA. Marill's gouache drawings and installations are the culmination of her art practice and scientific investigation, which capture unique moments of beauty and discovery. With an interest in field research, theoretical physics and evolutionary biology, Marill has developed new ways of seeing the interconnectedness of matter, especially as it is manifested in ecological systems. At the heart of her work is the continuous human struggle to reconcile the tensions between the natural world, art, science and lived experience. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States in New York, California, Seattle, Miami, Texas, and Arizona. Recent critical acclaim for her solo show Newfoundland in Los Angeles, and A Big Small Town in Scottsdale, have brought new attention to her work. She is the recipient of several awards including The Charles Baskerville Painting Award, 2004, The Contemporary Forum Artist Grant, 2005 and a recent nominee for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant, 2008. Mrs. Marill graduated from San Francisco State University, 2002 with a BA in painting, then moved to Ithaca, New York to attend Cornell University where she received an MFA, 2004. Her work has been published in New American Paintings, Wired Magazine, Southwest Art, The New Times, LA weekly and LA Times. Currently, Carrie Marill lives in Goodyear, Arizona. In addition to creating artwork, Marill runs a Community Supported Organic Farm.

Matthew Moore's is a fourth generation farmer whose land and life is quickly being overcome by suburban sprawl. He creates large site-specific earthworks on and around his family's land, which highlight the grounds on which the urban and rural collide and compete. Moore also works with video and installation art, addressing issues of ecological, cultural, and economical sustainability revealed through his artistic narrative regarding the potential loss of the romanticized American farm.
Moore's artwork has been exhibited nationally, from the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, to Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts. Moore's latest creations premiered at ASU Art Museum's, New American City: Artist Look Forward. In January of 2008, Moore will be a part of a traveling show about the contemporary American suburb for the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, which is being curated with the Heinz Architectural Center at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
Moore is published internationally. Metropolis Magazine, Dwell, and Architecture magazine included his work, as well as the publications Mark Magazine and Dazed and Confused of Europe. He is featured in Phoenix: 21st Century City, a book by Booth-Clibborn Editions.

K. Saari Gallery proudly announces the opening of Confluence featuring two of Steamboat Springs local artists, Julie K. Anderson in ceramics and Nancy Jeffrey in painting. There will be an opening reception on Friday, August 1, 2008 from 5 – 8pm.

Inspired by her obsession with science, architecture, and design Julie K. Anderson is compelled to produce work that has been thoroughly crafted. She strives to create artwork that is likeable and understandable for many people, basing her designs on familiar natural forms such as the movement of water over the earth from mountains to rivers to oceans and then back into the sky. The cyclical patterns found in nature are recurring subjects in her artistic pursuits.
Anderson's botanical background is revealed in nearly everything she produces. "I believe many aspects of my own personality are intricately linked to certain characteristics of plants: the way some small or commonplace, yet complex, plants are easily overlooked amidst a lush forest; the delicate, fragile nature of leaves and flowers contrasted with the strength and power of the root system; the ability to convert and thrive on the waste products of the environment," says Anderson.

Nancy Jeffrey's use of acrylic and marble plaster on a panel is what creates her fine art paintings. Since 1992, Jeffrey has owned and operated Studio 211 Ltd. She aims to offer the best in design by partnering up with other artist, designers, and archeitects. At the studio and in her pieces, Jeffrey pushes the tradition of mural painting back into the category of fine art with a strong fondness for the surreal. "I like to treat space a sculptural, an element to move within and experience from all advantage,"says Jeffrey.

K. Saari Gallery is proud to announce the opening of New Paintings by
Denver artist Michael Dowling. The show will feature six large - scale paintings from his new series.

Dowling does not usually like to discuss his work unless he is directly questioned. He sums up this new body of work by stating: I hope mostly that my art work will speak for its self, and that those viewing it will create their own story as to meaning. This body of work seems to have been always in my mind as far as the forms and symbols used.
I grew up Catholic, so began incorporating much of the symbolic text from that ideology, but use it only if I can find a more universal voice in it now. Thus the doves. The forms began with the funnel shape and grew into other studies of the experience of this event, other moments in its development.

Dowling studied studio art at the University of Colorado at Denver and the Scuola Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy. He has had numerous solo and group shows in Colorado including Jung Gallery, Denver and at Walker Fine Art, Denver. His work is included in several collections across the world including Bank One, Denver, CO; Saks Fifth Avenue, Denver, CO; Gucci Collection, Florence, Italy; among others.

K. Saari Gallery is proud to announce the opening of previous local now Front Range artist Rob Williams. The show will feature new works on paper, canvas and birch panels from his new series Need to Breath.

Williams work is created to make people stop, slow down and take a look around. Titles are given to give the viewer an entrance point, although he would prefer his audience take the piece and make it their own.

For Williams the pure joy of the creative process is his inspiration. Trained as a graphic designer he combines graphic techniques, his natural sense of color and symmetry, water based oils, inks, graphite and resin to create these whimsical environments.

Williams is a self taught artist. He has shown in numerous galleries from
Chicago to San Francisco and is currently represented by Ray Stock Fine Art;
Denver, CO. The Aspen Gallery; Aspen, CO. and K. Saari Gallery; Steamboat Springs, CO.

Glass Sculpture

K. Saari Gallery is proud to announce the opening of Marta Thoma and her recycled glass sculptures. The show will feature new work by the California based artist.

Thoma's recent work, the welded steel and bottle sculpture reflects nature and life in motion.
These compositions and designs are inspired by movement within nature, wings in motion, and bodies of water.
She is a painter and 2D artist as well as a sculptor and the sculptures often begin as drawings. The final compositions change however, sometimes radically as they begin to materialize. As she states in her biography, " I think of the sculptures as line drawings with the bottles creating shades and tone across the line drawing like washes of transparent watercolors. I work to vary the stroke of the line drawing with different line widths, using heavy and light steel wire to vary the gesture. By adding steel mesh with a grid, I add more line work with structure and movement.
The bottles work together to create volume and density while flowing across the "line drawing" of the steel armature. Where the white of the paper shows through when painting with watercolors, sunlight and the world behind them can be seen through glass bottles. The bottles are seductive, glass diamonds, while at the same time they are debris; leftovers from mass production, once useful but now destined for the landfill. The sculpture embodies contradictions about what is beautiful and what is art. It brings up questions about our culture, mass production of products, and how we are caring for the environment. The work is a continuation of artwork informed by surrealism, cubism, modernism, pop art, and environmental art. In 1989 I began making sculpture with "ready-mades," everyday items such as spoons, industrial vents, fans, and flexible electrical conduit. By including such objects, I believe the work has the soul of a past life from its previous use and meaning in culture. I aim to provide layers of meaning within the artwork so that there are many ways to interpret the art. Like a dream, the art can be the subject of varied interpretations. In 1993 I made my first "Earth Tear," sculpture made of 250 recycled bottles and steel. My recent work is a continuation of this exploration of bottles and steel."
Thoma's work is included in several permanent collections including; The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Costa Rica Rene De Rosa Art Park; Norcal Company Art Collection, San Francisco, CA and the City of Palo Alto Public Art Collection City of San Leandro Public Art Collection, among others. She recently had a solo exhibition in November at the William Havu Gallery in Denver, and was a National Finalist for the Water Wall Public Art Project.

K. Saari Gallery is proud to announce the opening of Cat Walking a solo exhibition by artist Susan Thompson.
The show will feature over fifteen encaustic works from her new series.

As Thompson states in her artist statement ,"This current body of work has evolved from the synthesis of two major influences in my life: the creation of art and the practice of tai chi chaun. In the study of these two disciplines, I’ve attempted to examine some related concepts. More specifically, these works represent a shared concept of dynamic energy, balanced with patience and intent.
In the practice of tai chi chaun, it is said, one should “step like a cat walking”. The disciplined patience executed in this act of stalking, is intended to demonstrate a consummate example of reserved, controlled, continuous, energy; defining the near perfect state of movement and stillness. It is sometimes referred to as an “exquisite state”- where movement and stillness become as one.

As a painter whose primary medium is encaustic, I would like to believe that the paint itself somehow manifests the inherent energy of its creation. It is poetic to think that somehow the activity of bees producing the wax, necessary for this medium, is somehow transmitted and never taken for granted."


The Space Between

K. Saari Gallery is proud to announce the opening of The Space Between a show featuring new work by mixed media artist Ashley Benton. There will be an opening reception for the artist Friday, May 29 from 6 - 8 p.m.

Ashley Benton is a Southern artist now living in Paonia and Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Benton's work is sensitive, serene, sometimes precarious and a bit surreal. Through line, form and space she investigates the figure beyond traditional rendering. The work seeks to capture the essence, emotion or feeling of the subject / object. “I want to visually articulate what is around us all the time but things we do not see or notice until we are reminded.” The paintings are that visual reminder and connection back to the self. The work often emphasizes the unreachable. Something that can not be captured or held like stories, metaphors and memories in a permanent state. Making art for Benton is the attempt to make the fleeting more permanent knowing all the while it is not possible making the challenge the process by which she can keep going.

Benton graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1990 with a BFA in Painting. She also attended the Atlanta College of Art and the University of Georgia. In 1990 she was awarded the Savannah College of Art and Design Chairmans Award. In 2007 and 2008 Benton was included in the Art Papers 4th and 5th Annual Auctions in Atlanta, Georgia. Her work is in the permanent collections of the The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia and the Savannah College of Art and Design, among others. Benton is represented by K. Saari Gallery, Steamboat Springs,Colorado.

K. Saari Gallery is proud to announce the opening of In Opposition by local artist Laura Wait. The show will feature new large scale paintings, encaustics and her book sculptures.

As stated in her artist's statement," The physical presence of paint is essential to my art, focusing on encaustic and acrylic, each affording different qualities and possibilities. I use encaustic to create dense ancient fresco like surfaces with layers of ink writing on Japanese paper saturated with color, scraped to reveal an inner texture, or scratched with lines to make new imaginary figures or handwriting. I use acrylics when I want to work large and fast, with big shapes and energy. Transparency of layers and writing through thick paint are important elements in creating all of the rich surfaces I imagine."

Wait lives in Steamboat Springs and makes paintings, unique books, and prints. She holds a degree in Art History from Barnard College, Columbia University, NY as well as certificates in Printmaking and Bookbinding from Croydon College of Art, England, awarded in 1976 and 1981.
She exhibits her art widely, and her artist's books are in many private and public collections, including the Library of Congress. She teaches art workshops to book artists throughout the country including Penland School of Crafts and the San Antonio School of Art.


Al Fresco

Please join us for First Friday, December 3 from 5 to 8 pm for the opening reception of Al Fresco new work by California based artist Kathryn Dunlevie. The show will feature over fifteen of her compelling, photographic collages. KSG is also proud to be hosting DJ Also Starring for the evening!

As Geri Hooks from Hooks-Epstein Galleries states, Dunlevie has long investigated the unseen seen which only art, particularly photography, allows us to see. She is able to subvert photography's original burden: that what you see is what you get; that there is only a single possible vantage point. Dunlevie breaks this down by photographing scenes from as many viewpoints as possible, then, literally, destroys the image prior to restoring it to often include disparate parts to form a coherent whole - that which photography can never show us even though we know it is there.

Kathryn Dunlevie has been in gallery shows all over the world, most recently she had a solo show Syncopated Spaces in 2008 at the Hooks-Epstein Galleries in Houston, TX. In 2009, she was included in the group show Arbor at the Michael Mazzeo Gallery in New York, as well a photographers: network "just" at Studio Thomas Kellner in Siegen, Germany and the Rising Stars show at the Belgravia Gallery in London. She was also the 2008 recipient of the Jurors Award from the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art in Novato, California.

Hard Matter
Feb. 4 - March 1, 2011

K. Saari Gallery is please to announce the opening of Hard Matter by artist Ann B. Murphy.
In her artist statement for the show Murphy describes Hard Matter as an installation of twenty eight sculptures and eight corresponding drawings. The individual sculptures depict cormorants or black shore birds in various bird activities such as perching, drying their wings or plucking their feathers. The intricate drawings document the various stages of construction for each sculpture. Murphy is inspired by the natural world and has spent a lot of time observing the behavior and habits of its occupants. Her study of the shapes of flocks and herds is what lead to the creation of this show, which will be her first three dimensional artwork representing these shapes and forms. Murphy chose cormorants because they symbolize brilliant and sometimes humorous levels of adaptation to their environment.

After living in Washington DC, Murphy relocated to New York City to study art at the School of Visual Arts. She pursued her undergraduate work at SVA, and eventually completed her MFA from there in 2005. She currently resides in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Murphy has been in many group shows, most recently at the A.M. Richards Gallery in Brooklyn, New York; as well as her solo show Rising and Falling this past October at the Eleanor Bliss Center for the Visual Arts, Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
