On October 15th 2008, promising young irish artist Hugh Delap, currently based in London, opens his first solo show at Cork's Shaw Gallery. The exhibition, opening at 8pm, comprises of 15 striking oil paintings.
Hugh was born in Dublin in 1985 and moved to Cork to study Fine Art at the Crawford College of Art and Design, graduating in 2007. He returned to Dublin before moving to London in September 2008 to begin a masters degree in Fine Art at the prestigious Wimbledon College of Art. Despite his tender years Hugh has already contributed to several group shows in Ireland and abroad and his work forms part of several noted private and public collections.
The Shaw Gallery, opened in 2006 specialises in seeking out new talent and since it's inception has provided no fewer than 12 artists with their first solo show, of which Hugh is the latest. This exhibition coincides with the reopening of the Shaw Gallery following a complete revamp and the new-look, more contemporary gallery is the ideal backdrop for Delap's bold modern paintings.
The artist has very definite views on what he hopes to achieve with this exhibition and these paintings -
''I do not set out knowing what a painting will look like. For me, painting is a compromise. The artist may set out with a very specific intention, but this intention will generally become distorted by the medium. The artist's aim, I feel is to find this compromise between the medium, his intention and his ability. It is this compromise that brings excitement to painting.''
According to gallery director Stephen Vaughan the artist is one to be watched for the future - "An emerging artist needs three things in order to seperate themselves from the hundreds who graduate from art colleges every year - talent, determination and an ability to evolve. Hugh is one of the few young artists I have met who has all three in abundance".
All works are currently available online at www.shawgallery.ie.
"New Work" by Hugh Delap runs at the Shaw Gallery, Washington Street, Cork from October 15th until November 2nd 2008.
