New contemporary art space Square Yard opens with the first in an exciting programme of exhibitions that will focus on emerging artists from within the region.

Beginning with Eating Dust the space is undertaking the ambitious challenge of a new exhibition around every ten days. This initial burst of activity hopes to attract attention to the area: which although central within Newcastle City Centre, is quiet and removed.

Eating Dust presents the work of artists Rachael Allen and Heather Fisher exploring mortality though intensive miniature models, large-scale sculpture, drawing and figurative painting.

Newcastle College has recently appointed a curator to develop this off-site space and to work in collaboration with arts organisations, planning a diverse programme of contemporary art exhibitions throughout 2009.

“At the moment there are many new, talented practitioners within the creative industries going unnoticed which is largely down to the current economic climate” explains Dawn Bothwell, Square Yard’s curator. “These artists are often producing work that is of an extremely high standard and is intellectually at the forefront. As part of the ethos for the space I am encouraging these artists to exhibit alongside other national and international artists which will hopefully give them valuable experience in the field and will raise their own profile.”

Eating Dust is free and open to the public between the 24 and 28th March, 11am-4pm with a preview on the 23rd March, 6pm-9pm. Details on forth-coming exhibitions will be published regularly on the gallery website: http://www.squareyardgallery.co.uk
