- GEORGES ROUAULT : Forme, Couleur, Harmonie
Until 18 March 2007
This retrospective at MAMCS aims to bring to light the sum of Georges Rouault’s artistic practice and research. After training alongside Henri Matisse, in Gustave Moreau’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Rouault developed a very spiritual approach to painting and the world. This exhibition presents the totality of his career and the numerous media Rouault employed: watercolour, ceramic, etchings, oil paintings, books. The artist’s modernism and dynamicism is evident in the one hundred works on display.

Commentated tours on Thursdays at 7pm (except 15 February) and Sundays at 11am.

Beginning with abstract compositions in the style of Mondrian and Van Doesburg, this exhibition explores the work which set him apart, and his adoption of a personal language expressed in his relief paintings. The artist’s photomontages and graphic works are also presented here in their entirety for the first time.

FRANCK NITSCHE : Project Room
16 February 2007 – 27 May 2007

Born in Gorlitz in 1964, Franck Nitsche executes his paintings from an image bank of magazine cut outs. His geometric abstractions utilise futurist form, complex perspective and an illusion of depth. The process of painting is evident in the thick use of colour to create images which occupy a space between abstraction and figuration.
