Mudam is presenting five solo exhibitions devoted to Sanja Ivekovic, Emily Bates, Filipa César, Simon Evans and Steven C. Harvey. These five distinct projects each reflect the development of the pratices of reputed artists from the international contemporary art scene.
After her retrospective at MoMA, and in advance of her participation in Documenta, Sanja Ivekovic returns to Luxembourg with Waiting for the Revolution. The exhibition occupies several galleries of the museum and brings together a large number of artworks produced by the Croatian artist between 1975 and today, including the monumental Lady Rosa of Luxembourg which is installed in the Grand Hall of the Mudam specially for the occasion. Throughout the exhibition period, a new production is visible in public space, on the Boulevard Roosevelt square opposite the Casino Luxembourg, which echoes the polemic generated by the original piece in 2001.
A book specifically devoted to the piece Lady Rosa of Luxembourg is being co-published by Mudam and the Casino Luxembourg in June 2012 and contains an interview with the artist along with texts by various writers. It is also accompanied by an analysis of the polemic in the media at the time.
The other exhibitions are situated in the two ground floor galleries. In The sky is glowing with the setting sun, Emily Bates presents a photographic series and a video produced following several visits to Japan. Filipa César’s exhibition 1975 is based on various film works in which she thematizes the recent history of her native Portugal. Simon Evans delivers the poetic resonances of his per- sonal universe, like a personal diary, through the collages and drawings he presents under the title How to be alone when you live with someone. Finally, through his series of drawings Vehicles, Steven C. Harvey offers a pessimistic view of a world dominated by machines, thus revealing the preoccupations of his own internal world.
Along with these new exhibitions, two other projects are currently on display at Mudam: the exhi- bition Fixed points finding a home by the American Sarah Sze, a young representative of the United States at the next Venice Biennale, and the exhibition Les Détours de l’abstraction devoted to artworks from the Mudam collection.
With its solo exhibitions, Mudam is participating in a cross-border cooperation project called Mono. From June 1st to September 2nd, 2012, twenty solo shows of modern and contemporary artists will be presented in fifteen cultural institutions in the Sarre, Lorraine and Luxembourg. SARAH SZE. FIXED POINTS FINDING A HOME

The American artist Sarah Sze creates ephemeral in situ sculptures, in which a host of everyday objects are painstakingly assembled to form light and fragile structures which invade space, calling to mind forms of spreading networks and urban fabric. Her works are invariably conceived in response to the architecture of exhibition venues, and invite spectators to move among different scales, ranging from humble to monumental, micro- and macroscopic. Mudam has invited Sarah Sze to make a new installation for the museum’s Henry J. and Erna D. Leir Pavilion.

LES DÉTOURS DE L'ABSTRACTION. COLLECTION MUDAM

Curators: Marie-Noëlle Farcy, Clément Minighetti
Artists: Claire Barclay, Robert Breer, Daniel Buren, Nicolas Chardon, Marc Couturier, Helmut Dorner, Günther Förg, Gaylen Gerber, Dominique Ghesquière, On Kawara, Harald Klingelhöller, Imi Knoebel, Alicja Kwade, Blinky Palermo, Laurent Pariente, Bruno Peinado, Frédéric Prat, Tobias Putrih, Miguel Ângelo Rocha, Thomas Schütte, Raphaël Zarka, Heimo Zobernig

History recorded Kandinsky’s shock when, for the first time, in 1896, he found himself in front of the series of Monet’s Meules (“Haystacks”), an experience which he turned into the ground- breaking event called abstraction. More than a century later, abstract art is still endlessly evolving and diversifying, with a great freedom of tone. It is this feature which the exhibition of the Mudam Collection is intent on emphasizing, focusing on the dissolution of the motif and the appearance of forms.
