Schools - Miami Art Museum

MAM & Schools

MAM’s offerings for teachers and students from kindergarten through twelfth grade make up the largest art-museum education program in Miami-Dade County. In collaboration with schools and their curriculum guidelines, MAM & Schools programs are designed to enrich the dialogue between visual art and language arts. Research continues to prove that involvement in the arts helps our students excel in school.

Museum Tours
10am and 11:30am Tuesday through Friday
MAM’s lively, interactive museum tours for kindergarten through twelfth grade students form the centerpiece of the MAM & Schools program. These inquiry-based tours are designed to strengthen the development of visual literacy and encourage self-expression at every grade level, while exposing students to our vibrant contemporary culture. The tours encourage observation, analysis and interpretation of the art of our times, complementing school curricula and promoting the critical thinking skills emphasized by Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) guidelines. Led by MAM’s professional gallery teachers, tours are approximately 90 minutes in length and culminate in an interactive exercise.

MAM provides free buses to Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers scheduling museum tours on a first-come, first-served basis. The museum offers tours Tuesdays through Fridays at 10am and 11:30am throughout the academic year. Tour admission is $1 per student; fee waived for Title 1 schools.

Classroom Visits
Teachers can schedule free classroom visits by the museum’s gallery teachers to introduce students to exhibitions on view. MAM gallery teachers can also visit schools on Career Days to talk about museums and related professions.

Self-guided Visits
1 pm-4pm Tuesday through Friday; 12-4 Saturday and Sunday
Teachers can bring their classes on their own to visit the museum during regular museum hours. There is no admission charge for students with valid ID. MAM asks that you notify us in advance if you are planning a self-guided visit to ensure your visit doesn’t coincide with the visits of other large groups. Museum-led tours have precedence. Please plan self-guided visits after 1 pm on weekdays or noon on weekends.

Student/Artist Talks
Because MAM is a contemporary art museum, we are able to offer students with a special interest in art unique opportunities to meet the artists whose work is on view in the museum’s galleries or the curators who create MAM’s exhibitions.

Museums Magnet Schools Program
One of the more rewarding educational experiences at MAM is the museum’s role in Miami-Dade’s Museums Magnet Schools Program. MAM is working alongside Southside Elementary and Shenandoah Middle School to develop exciting new ways of integrating curricular needs with artworks and the museum experience. Classroom visits, regular museum visitation and hands-on activities are specifically designed to complement grade-level needs.

Scholastic Art Awards
The Scholastic Art Awards and Exhibition has been a mainstay of MAM’s annual exhibition schedule since its beginnings. Each year this exhibition, hosted in conjunction with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, showcases the best work produced by young artists in both public and private schools. Winners go on to compete at the national level where students from Miami-Dade have an enviable, record of outstanding performance.

Resources for Teachers

Teacher Workshops
Twice a year MAM offers educators professional enrichment workshops designed to explore teaching strategies and interdisciplinary connections to works of art in MAM’s special exhibitions. Workshops include private tours, hands-on activities and discussions with curators, artists, or scholars. Each workshop also provides the opportunity to network with colleagues and share perspectives on new approaches to education.

Curriculum Resource Units
MAM distributes materials for classroom use at each Teacher Workshop. These resource units provide teachers with visuals, background information, and suggestions for curricular applications. For teachers unable to attend, a limited number of the CRU’s are available on a first-come, first-served basis for a minimal shipping and handling fee.
