Picture Library – Reproduction Rights

The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (abbr. BStGS) comprise four museums in Munich: Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek, Sammlung Moderne Kunst in der Pinakothek der Moderne and Schack-Galerie and 15 State Galleries spread throughout Bavaria. They own a constantly updated picture library where almost all paintings and sculptures from their collections are registered with black-and-white photographs. The contents of this archive can be viewed for studies and scientific research during the office hours upon appointment.

b/w. photographs
Prints of any painting in the collection of the BStGS are available at a minimum of Euro 6 (plus postage and package).

Reproduction Rights
To purchase a photograph does not include the right to reproduce it in any form. An application must be made to our archive and fee must be paid. Its calculation depends on the print run, the distribution area, the description and the language of publication. Please note that we cannot process incomplete requests. It is your responsibility to obtain permission from the archive before reproducing a work from the collection of the BStGS, or this will be charged with a 100% supplement. The BStGS are holding the reproduction rights for the paintings in their possession. This does not include the copyright which remains with the artist himself if he is alive respectively with his heirs if he has been dead for less than 70 years.

Photographing
Photography is permitted for private purpose only and without flash and tripod. Only upon application to the archive permission to take photographs with tripod and flash may be granted. This permission is also due to fees.

Office hours
Monday - Friday 8 – 12 a.m. and 2 – 4 p.m.

Colour reproductions
High quality colour reproductions (transparencies) of all paintings from the collection of the BStGS are available at ARTOTHEK which is an archive authorized by the BStGS to deal with them and if requested to supply with the appropriate rights too.
