Aargauer Kunsthaus

The Aargauer Kunsthaus is home to one of the most beautiful and comprehensive public collections of recent Swiss art. It is an ideal venue for encountering the great diversity of Swiss art – from the 18th century to today.

Foundation and History
The initiative was taken to build up an art collection in Aarau with the foundation of the Aargauische Kunstverein in 1860. From the very beginning, Swiss art was the main focus of the collecting activities. Regular new acquisitions, donations and works on permanent loan continue to broaden the scope of the collection to this very day.

The Aargauer Kunsthaus, originally built in 1959, became increasingly unable to cope with the constant expansion of the collection and the dynamism of the exhibition programme. After several years of planning, therefore, a unique extension designed by the internationally renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron and the artist Rémy Zaugg was opened in 2003.

The building represents a harmonious blend of old and new, a mixture of park and city, resulting from a careful analysis of the urban surroundings. While the entrance area and foyer, with the two winding staircases, make a spectacular, open and inviting impact, the architecture of the exhibition rooms recedes into the background, so to speak. The Aargauer Kunsthaus has a total of 3’000 square metres of exhibition space (twice as much as before the extension) at its disposal in bright spacious rooms. Parallel to the permanent exhibition of the collection, about six alternating exhibitions are mounted here each year. The building also houses a museum café, an artbook shop, a publicly accessib... Permanent Collection

In the course of time, various areas were focussed on. The focal points of the collection's older section are groups of works by Caspar Wolf, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Arnold Böcklin, as well as 19th century landscape painting. The collection also provides a representative survey of 20th century Swiss art, from early modernism to post-war abstract art, the artistic upheaval of the 1960s to the immediate present.

Graphisches Kabinett and Galerie der Gegenwart
In the Graphische Kabinett various exhibitions and new presentations of works from the collection are shown, be that prints of photographs by Evelyn Hofer, Binia Bill, Markus Raetz, Roman Signer, or works on paper which, for example, complemented the large exhibition “Wolkenbilder”.

The Galerie der Gegenwart embraces the contemporary section of the collection. These work groups are regularly presented from a whole new angle – so that a lively view of the collection is maintained, and the Aargauer Kunsthaus can take recent developments in contemporary art into account.

Artwork of the Month
Every month a specific work from the Collection is focussed on. In this context, a guided-tour for the general public takes place every week at lunch-time, with the aim of facilitating an intense engagement with a specific artistic position.

Museum Education

A particular focus of the Aargauer Kunsthaus's art mediation is the educational programme, which is particularly aimed at young children, adolescents, and school pupils, but also addresses adults. Anyone choosing to join one of our “Kunst-Pirsch” or “Kunst-Ausflug” can gain a playful and experimental access to art, while at the same time receiving inspiration for their own creative work at school or at home.

Membership

The Aargauische Kunstverein - Aargau Art Society

The Aargauische Kunstverein was founded in 1860 with the aim of building up a collection of Swiss art, inaugurating a museum, and generally promoting an understanding of fine art. To this very day, the society influences the fate of the art collection and the exhibition activities – and will continue to do so.

The collecting activities of the Aargauische Kunstverein are also supported by the Society of Friends of the Aargauische Kunstsammlung.

Thanks to its large number of dedicated members, the Aargau Art Society was in a position to co-finance the recent extension to the Kunsthaus.

Members not only support the Kunsthaus, they also have the advantage of free admission to the Aargauer Kunsthaus and 15 other art institutions in Switzerland.

Reductions on the price of catalogues and participation in art trips are some of the other advantages enjoyed by members of the Kunstverein.
