From Warhol, Lichtenstein, Lempicka to Rainer, Magritte, De Kooning

The BA-CA Kunstforum is the top address for art lovers from home and abroad when it comes to the presentation of classical modern art and avant-garde painters of the post-war era.

More than 300,000 art enthusiasts roll up every year to see the fascinating temporary exhibitions.

From Van Gogh to Miró, from Cézanne to Picasso, from Kandinsky to Chagall, from Warhol to Rainer, you’ll find it hard to name any famous artist who hasn’t been presented at the BA-CA Kunstforum in a solo exhibition or included in a theme project. Since 2005, the “tresor im BA-CA Kunstforum” – the “strongroom in the BA-CA Kunstforum”, a modern presentation platform for young contemporary artists – has been showing headline-hitting exhibitions of international format, which also anticipate many trends on the art market.

Exhibitions

EROS IN MODERN ART
March 1st 2007 - July 22nd 2007
In the spring of 2007, the BA-CA Kunstforum will be holding an extraordinary exhibition on one of the most seminal themes of the modern movement in art: eroticism.

The encounter with all forms and varieties of Eros – love, passion and lust, desire, union and secret longings – always has been, and still is, one of the fundamental impulses for artistic inspiration.

The BA-CA Kunstforum is now addressing this theme with an exciting exhibition. More than 200 works by prominent artists from the late nineteenth century until the present day give striking and immediate expression to the fascination exercised on artists by the theme of eroticism. But the exhibition is not confined solely to the subject of the human body and portrayal of the act of love. The concept far more involves works that address the erotic sphere of temptation and union, desire and fantasy, dream and the subconscious, in a multitude of forms.

Education

History
Flashback: to the year 1980. With the idea and backing of the popular Viennese actor Heinz Conrad, the first exhibitions were organised in the former counter hall of the Österreichische Creditanstalt für Handel und Gewerbe (Austrian Bank of Trade and Commerce), premises built in 1914 and then standing empty. The curtain-raiser was a comprehensive show on Austria’s cultural and intellectual history from 1880 to 1980: “Aufbruch in die Moderne” (Starting out into the Modern Age), curated by Rupert Feuchtmüller and organised by Ivo Stanek, boasted straightaway the proud statistic of 28,000 visitors.

The occasion for this project was the Länderbank’s centenary. And the subsequent exhibitions, such as “Fotografis” – a presentation of the superlative photograph collection of the Länderbank, as it was then called – also proved to be great attractions for the public. The success of these exhibitions was as surprising as it was overwhelming, so that the director of the Länderbank and later Federal Chancellor Franz Vranitzky initiated a resolution to set up a permanent exhibition venue oriented on international standards – the Länderbank Kunstforum was born, and the present director of the Albertina, Klaus Albrecht Schröder, was its first director.

Trendsetter Kunstforum
In 1988, the Austrian star architect Gustav Peichl was commissioned to design the first reconstruction of the Kunstforum, making it the most modern exhibition building in Austria at the time. The re-opening was in March 1989 with “Egon Schiele und seine Zeit” (Egon Schiele and his Time). This exhibition attracted 186,000 visitors and was successful not only in Vienna; i...+ [ Read all ]
