Canberra Museum And Gallery

A vibrant place in the heart of the city, Canberra Museum and Gallery explores the region's social history and visual arts with dynamic exhibitions and unique community programs and events.
Housing a permanent collection, Reflecting Canberra, and a variety of local, national and international exhibitions, CMAG provides a refreshing insight to the integration of social history and the visual arts.


Permanent Collection

The Canberra Museum and Gallery's focus is the articulation of the historical, social, artistic and environmental elements of the Canberra region. The permanent collection integrates the visual arts and social history and aims to preserve, reflect, document and challenge the past, present and future of the ACT community. Amongst the themes, which direct selection, criteria for the inclusion of objects into the permanent collection are: "Canberra's Identity", "A Sense of Place", and "Canberra's Cultural Diversity".
Objects from the Collection are on periodic display in CMAG's permanent exhibition, Reflecting Canberra.

LOST HOUSES OF THE MOLONGLO VALLEY

23 June until 14 October
Gallery 2/3
This 1910 snapshot explores the landscape and inhabitants of the
Molonglo Valley before the founding of Canberra. Based on a book by Dr Linda Young, "Lost Houses of the Molonglo Valley: Canberra before the federal capital city, this exhibition uncovers Canberra as a city which has bush beginnings.


ANNA EGGERT: MESMERIZED


30 June – 2 September
Gallery 4
Anna Eggert creates sculptures from steel mesh imitating the
flowing forms of female clothing. In this exhibition Eggert examines
the Muslim burqa, exploring the perception of women even when
their faces are unseen.


MARY CUNNINGHAM: A Life Of Love And Duty


7 July – 30 September
Gallery 5
This exhibition follows the life of Mary Cunningham (1869–1930), a life conducted in places close to the hearts of Canberrans; Tuggeranong
and Lanyon homesteads. Based on Jennifer Horsfield’s book, Mary Cunningham—An Australian Life, it tells domestic stories against the backdrop of the big events of last century; Federation, WW1 and the establishment of the Federal Capital Territory.

Schools

Canberra Museum and Gallery offers a range of education programs that encourage students to interact with objects and artworks. Programs provide opportunities for students to explore Canberra's identity through the integration of visual arts and social history. Many programs are also run in conjunction with exhibitions.

Family Event
First Sunday in every month, 1.00 - 4.00pm
Join us on the first Sunday of every month for an afternoon of
structured and free-range activities for children aged 4 to 8 years. Structured workshops run throughout the day and bookings are strongly recommended
Workshops are led by artist and educator, Amelia Zaraftis.
