Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí

The present-day Portlligat House-Museum was Salvador Dalí’s only fixed abode from 1930, the place in which he normally lived and worked up till 1982 when, upon his wife’s death, he took up residence at Púbol Castle.

Salvador Dalí moved to Portlligat in 1930, into a small fisherman’s hut, attracted by the landscape, the light and the isolation of the place. Taking that initial construction as a basis, he created his house little by little over the course of forty years. He himself described it "like a true biological structure [...]. Each new pulse in our life has its own new cell, a room".

The resulting form is the present labyrinthine structure which, from one point of departure, the Bear Lobby, spreads out and winds around in a succession of zones linked by narrow corridors, slight changes of level and blind passageways. Packed out with a multitude of objects and mementoes of Dalí, these zones are decorated with features that make them particularly warm: carpets, whitewash, dried flowers, velvet upholstery, antique furniture, stuffed animals, etc. Furthermore, all the rooms have windows of different shapes and proportions framing the same landscape that is a constant point of reference in Dalí’s work: the Portlligat bay.

Three different areas can be distinguished in the house: the part where the couple’s more private life was lived, on the ground floor and rooms 7 to 12; the studio, rooms 5 and 6, with numerous objects related to artistic activity; and the outside areas, room 13 and courtyards 14 and 15, designed to live a public life.

Education

The Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation has a service for school groups (nursery, primary, secondary, sixth-form, training courses) as well as for adult education, special education, school exchanges, artistic teaching, and so forth. It offers a service for advice and coordination of visits to the three museums (Teatre-Museu Dalí in Figueres, Casa-Museu CastellGala Dalí in Púbol and Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí in Portlligat), as well as a complete programme of guided visits.

The content of the visits is entirely suited to the various educational levels through an approach which is at once imaginative, amusing, careful and logical. With highly participatory offerings, we aim to provide teachers and pupils with suitable instruments for studying one of the 20th century’s most significant artists. The various parts of the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres and Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol become privileged places for discovering the artist. The visits can be arranged in Catalan, Spanish, French or English.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum is one of the Spanish State’s most visited museums. So that you can find out about it in the greatest comfort and at the same time enjoy the workshop-visits, we would recommend that you visit it from November to February, thus avoiding the crowds frequently found throughout the rest of the year.

Please ask for the content work-cards, which in addition to the description and objectives include the methodology and materials used. You will also find in them suggestions for follow-up work at school after the visit.

The programme offered by the Educational Service is supervised academically by the Dalí Studies Centre.

Membership

One of the initiatives that show the great popularity of Salvador Dalí is the Amics dels Museus Dalí (Friends of the Dalí Museums) association.

Founded in 1993 under the presidency of Ms Lola Mitjans, the association has more than five hundred members around the world, which makes it a dynamic, popular and fully consolidated entity.

The purpose of Amics dels Museus Dalí is to disseminate the image and the museum work of the three Dalí museums, while being at the same time a meeting place for a number of people who doubtless share an admiration for Dalí.

The Amics dels Museus Dalí association engages in a wide range of activities: gatherings/dinners with guests invited to talk about subjects relating to Salvador Dalí (guests have included Modest Cuixart, Baltasar Porcel, Xavier Corberó, Pedro Aldámiz, etc.), surrealistic window-dressing competitions in Figueres shops, film projections, conference series, concerts, excursions and cultural trips.

We might also mention that Amics dels Museus Dalí acquired an etching by Salvador Dalí called Sailors. Also worthy of special mention is its perhaps still more important latest contribution – the gift to Figueres Town Hall of two giant Dalí and Gala look-alike figures for use in festivals, presented in society in May 1999.

Become a member of Friends of the Dalí Museums and enjoy this dreamlike, surrealistic and exciting world.

Annual membership fee:
Individual: 35 €
Family: 50 €
Children: 12 €

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, members gain free entrance to the Dalí museums, discounts in their shops and preferential tickets for various exhibitions.+ [ Read all ]
