Dahesh Museum Of Art

The Dahesh Museum of Art is the only institution in the United States devoted to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting works by Europe's academically trained artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Dahesh serves a diverse audience by placing these artists in the broader context of 19th-century visual culture, and by offering a fresh appraisal of the role academies played in reinvigorating the classical ideals of beauty, humanism, and skill.

Permanent Collection

The Dahesh Museum of Art collection contains paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and books by the most popular artists of 19th- and early 20th-century Europe. Artists such as Barye, Benouville, Bouguereau, Bonheur, Cabanel, Gérôme, Leighton, Picou, Troyon, and Vernet explored the subjects preferred by their fellow academicians, and by the growing middle-class audience who visited the annual Salons in Europe’s major cities. Sumptuous landscapes, exotic "Oriental" scenes, closely observed animals, grandiloquent images from history and myth, and intimate scenes of everyday life form the core of the Museum’s collection. Works by masters acclaimed today, and also by artists known only in their day, are viewed side-by-side, as they were 150 years ago. The Museum’s permanent collection continues to grow with new acquisitions, gifts, and bequests, and the curators are happy to learn of works available for consideration.

Exhibitions

Every exhibition presented at the Museum sets out to explore, often for the first time, some important feature of academic art and the institutions that nourished it in 19th- and early 20th-century Europe. Utilizing loans from distinguished international collections, both private and public, previous exhibitions here have examined—among other topics—the training of artists; the world of the Salon with its competitions and juries; the 19th-century fascination with the Orient, reciprocated from Cairo to Paris; the influence of photography, travel, and archeological discoveries of the classical past; and the reproduction of artworks for an international market.

The Dahesh Museum of Art complements special exhibitions with selections from its permanent collection, including familiar favorites and recent acquisitions.

Groups

The Museum has a small, friendly and experienced Groups Team dedicated to arranging private group visits. Group organizers can take advantage of one point of contact to book private tours. We take time to advise on all aspects of planning a group's visit. A member of the team meets and assists the group on arrival to ensure that everything goes smoothly so that organizers can also relax and enjoy their visit.
Days, Times and Cost
Private tours and talks numbering 15-50 people take place Tuesdays through Fridays, from 11am to 6pm. The cost for these tours is $6 per person, including admission and tour guide.

Audio Equipment
We offer each member of the group the option to use our new audio equipment to enjoy the talk without the distraction of others. The audio device amplifies the lecturer's voice, eliminates external noise, and deters 'outside' individuals from attaching themselves to your private tour. The audio devices are user-friendly and have proven to be a great success!

Types of Tours and Talks
