Dommuseum

Vienna's Cathedral and Diocesan Museum opened, in 1933 by Cardinal Theodor Innitzer, is regarded as one of the exquisite gems amongst the many museums in Vienna. The main accent of the permanent exhibition of the Cathedral Museum is on ecclesiastical works of art from St Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, and other churches within the city or its surroundings. The most precious treasure is the portrait of Duke Rudolf IV, painted in the l4th century, which is the oldest surviving portrait from the Occident.

Permanent Collection

In our TREASURE CHAMBER we are delighted to show you unique pieces of Sacral Art from the Middle Ages, symbolised by the portrait of Duke Rudolf IV, painted in the l4th century, which is the oldest surviving portrait from the Occident.

The Otto Mauer Collection

In the year 1980 the collection of the legendary theologian and art lover Otto Mauer (1907-1973) joined the cathedral museum after it's aquisition by the archdiocese Vienna.

It covers almost 3,000 works of mainly Austrian 20. Century art, for example works of Alfreds Kubin and Hans Fronius, or works of those artists, who were discovered or promoted by Otto Mauer, like Arnulf Rainer, Josef Mikl, Markus Prachensky or Wolfgang Hollegha. Because of lack of space only parts of this collection can be made accessible in the framework of special exhibitions for the public.
