Eye Level Gallery

Eye Level Gallery Society is a non-profit, artist-run centre and registered charity mandated to present the work of regional, national and international contemporary artists since its establishment in 1974. Eye Level Gallery Society evolved from Inventions Gallery, which was established in 1972 by a group of women artists. In 1974, when a fire caused a move to new premises, Inventions changed its name to Eye Level Gallery and opened its membership to include male artists. As was the case with many other artist-run centres, from its beginnings the Gallery sought to offer an alternative to the mandates and practices of established art institutions. In addition to its visual arts program, Eye Level Gallery sponsored a variety of other cultural activities including music and dance performances. This support lead to the development of two other artist-run organizations in Halifax , Live Art Dance and the Centre for Art Tapes. Aiming for greater member involvement, in 1986 Eye Level moved to a location in Halifax’s north-end, the neighborhood in which most of its artist-members lived. With a strong and steady following, Eye Level returned to its former downtown site in 1993 and existed there until mid-2000. In September 2004, Eye Level Gallery moved to a new storefront location on 2128 Gottingen Street.

WILDERNESS ACTS

This summer Eyelevel Gallery is heading into the woods! In partnership with Kejimkujik National Park, Eyelevel Gallery will be presenting Wilderness Acts, a curated series of inter-active and site-specific works by three Canadian artists: Rita McKeough, Janet Morton and Lori Blondeau.

From August 16-19, these selected artists will present ongoing performances and installations that ask the question of “what is wilderness?” Additionally Wilderness Acts investigates the making of contained, untouched and sacred natural spaces (such as national parks and land preserves) and how humans create, experience and view these spaces. You are responsible for reserving your camp-site (it is highly recommended that you do this ahead of time).
To reserve your private campsite in the park, please visit the 24-hour Internet service at www.pccamping.ca or dial toll free 1-877-737-3783

Membership

Eyelevel recently celebrated thirty years of programming and promoting contemporary art by local, national and international artists. As we begin our 31 st year, we’ve set a goal of reaching out to our members—both past and present—with a new membership program, designed to include all levels of support. Since 1974, when it first opened its doors in Halifax, Eyelevel Gallery has been a major contributor to the local and national visual arts community. It has been a venue for and supported a variety of cultural activities including theatre, dance and musical performances. For over thirty years, Eyelevel Gallery has presented stimulating exhibitions by emerging artists and by artists with more established careers. We provide a supportive environment that fosters the research and development of innovative artistic practices and our programming encourages the support, discussion and education of contemporary visual art.

Your Membership contributes to our ongoing activities including exhibitions, artist presentations, performances, screenings and special projects all of which are offered to the public for free.
