For over a century the Gibbes Museum of Art has played a significant role in both enriching the aesthetic and cultural lives of its visitors and shaping the careers of artists in Charleston, South Carolina. Serving as the principal repository of the visual record of the South Carolina Lowcountry, the Gibbes permanent collection includes over 10,000 paintings, works on paper, photographs, and sculpture that presents a unique story about the dynamic history and impact of the visual arts in the American South. Through its landmark exhibitions, premier collection, and innovative educational programs the Gibbes continues to fulfill its mission to offer a thorough knowledge of the visual culture of Charleston, the South Carolina Lowcountry and the American South from the colonial era through today.


Permanent Collection

Housing over 10,000 objects, the Gibbes Museum of Art presents a rich, vibrant history of the Lowcountry. The permanent collection highlights significant people, places and periods from Charleston’s birth as a British colony, through the American Revolution, the later ravages of the Civil War, and culminating today as a vibrant, culturally diverse and dynamic community.
