Historial De La Grande Guerre

In 1992, the Conseil Général of the Somme region inaugurated the Historial de la Grande Guerre in Péronne, on the site of the front line of the battle of the Somme, in a remarkable white concrete building, designed for the purpose by the architect Ciriani.

The museum presents a unique collection of objects relating to daily life, highlighting a social and cultural history in the context of military objects. The museum functions on an international level by displaying objects originating from the three empires at war.

The Historial de la Grande Guerre is thus neither a memorial nor a military museum, but rather a museum of mentalities. It aims to demonstrate how the cultural representations of combatants and civilians have been affected, through its exceptional collection of 50 000 objects and archives.

Permanent Collection

The museum’s five rooms offer insight both into life on the front line and behind the scenes. Weapons and military equipment are displayed in the centre of the rooms, while civilian life is evoked in the cabinets fixed to the walls, divided into three parts, consecrated to Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

As contemporary as the architecture, the museum’s layout lends itself to comprehension and emotion: the visitor’s proximity to the objects becomes a proximity to the events represented. With a focus on social history rather than military history, the museum allows the visitor to make comparisons between the various groups at war, all the while distinguishing between life on the front line and life at home.
