Klimt Villa Wien

From 1912 to 1918, during the last span of his life, Klimt rented this small house situated within a wild garden of flowers and fruit trees. After Klimt’s death (in 1918) and after the new construction of a villa (on top of the studio house, in 1923) the building’s history resembles the Tale of the Sleeping Beauty; only in 1998 it was reawakened by the Klimt Society. Here is the last studio of Gustav Klimt, the only one still in existence; it offers an authentic insight into the painter’s life and work.

Gustav Klimt made the following observations about himself as a painter: "...There is no self-portrait of me. I am not interested in my own person as a subject of a picture - more in other people, especially women, but even more so in other appearances. I am convinced that as a person I'm not particularly interesting. (…) I'm a painter who paints day in and day out, from morning till evening - figure pictures and landscapes, more rarely portraits. Whoever wants to know something about me - as an artist which alone is significant - they should look attentively at my pictures and there seek to recognize what I am and what I want."

Kijiro Ohta & Gustav Klimt

In 1879 Gustav and Ernst, together with Franz Matsch (1861-1942), contribute to the Grand Festive Procession, designed by Hans Makart (1840-1884), to celebrate the silver wedding anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth.

In 1889 Klimt visits the Salzkammergut for the first time, and in 1890 receives the 'Kaiserpreis' for his painting of members of Viennese society in the Burgtheater. In 1891 his brother Ernst marries Helene Flöge (1871-1936). Gustav paints a portrait of her younger sister, Emilie Flöge (1874-1952). This was one of his first portraits.
