Kunstverein Für Die Rheinlande Und Westfalen

Founded 1829, the art association for Rhineland and Westphalia ranks among the oldest art associations of Germany. Since its establishment its principal aim is the presentation of contemporary art, their discussion and mediation.

Since 1967 the art association - together with the newly created
Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (also in this database) disposes of the premises in the modernistic buildings of Konrad Beckmann at the Grabbeplatz. Situated conveniently in the center of the city, the art association presents ever since its program in direct neighbourhood of the academy of arts Duesseldorf as well as the art collection North Rhine-Westphalia, established in 1985.

The renovation of the building by the team of architects 'rheinflügel' on initiative of the art association in the year 2001 reduced the brutalistic architecture to its original form.

Beside varying exhibitions the purposeful mediation of the social relevance of contemporary art determines the profile of the art association. Moreover it's the association's task to develop new models, which determine the relationship between art and its viewers as well as the comment of the present, their challenges and visions. In order to facilitate the approach to the current art and to allow for productive handling of its exhibitions, the members and visitors of the art association of Rhineland and Westphalia have also at their disposal numerous guided tours, lectures, film programs, symposiums and special journeys.
2001 the art association was distinguished for its consistent program with the Jürgen Ponto foundation price "Young Art in art associations". [ Read all ]

Exhibitions

Gerard Byrne
5. Mai – 8. Juli 2007

The photographic and cinematic work of the Irish artist Gerard Byrne is based on texts and pictures, in which social conditions are negotiated in subtle ways. The spectrum reaches from a discussion with Jean Paul Sartre up to interviews from Lifestyle magazines of the 70's 60's, which Byrne sets into scene with actors. The fact that little seems to remain retrospectively from visions, although they seem to possess still actuality, is the basic motive which threades through his work.
