Lahti Art Museum

The Lahti Art Museum was established in 1950 and, since then, it has been situated at Vesijärvenkatu 11, in connection with the City Technical Office. In the exhibition department at street level there are constantly changing exhibitions showing old and modern art and graphic design both from Finland and from abroad. The is no permanent exhibition at all, but works from the museums's are being shown mainly at different theme exhibitions.

In connection with the Art Museum there is also the Poster Museum, established in 1975.

Since 1980 the Lahti Art Museum has been operating as a regional art museum of the Päijät-Häme district, which encompasses the city of Lahti and 12 surrounding municipalities. The task of a regional art museum is to give guidance and professional help to the local municipalities and communities in matters concerning pictorial art.

Permanent Collection

The Lahti Art Museum's own collection consists of approximately 1700 works of art, being mainly Finnish and local art from 1950's to the present day. The basic collection, which includes the oldest works of art, consists of the 75 works received from the former Viipuri Art Museum. This collection is composed of Finnish and foreign art from the 19th and early 20th century.

In 1982 the museum received a donation of great art historical value: the collection of the Association of Finnish Artistic Draftsmen consists of 1450 drawings from the mid 19th century to this day. Furthermore, the museum takes care of several deposited collections and the art collection of the City of Lahti, the works of which have been situated in different departments and offices in Lahti.
