Miami Art Museum

The successor to the Center for the Fine Arts, the Miami Art Museum was founded in 1996 as a contemporary art museum with a permanent collection.

MAM is dedicated to engaging a broad public with art from the twentieth century through the present. MAM’s collection, which Art in America magazine called “the quintessential Miami collection” in 1999, looks at international art from the perspective of the Americas and reflects the cosmopolitan makeup of Miami, forging connections among diverse groups and ideas.

Permanent Collection

Created with the vision to provide Miami with a legacy for future generations, MAM's collection has been referred to by Art in America as "the quintessential Miami collection."

Looking at international art from the perspective of the Americas, MAM's collection reflects the cosmopolitan makeup of Miami and forges connections between diverse groups and ideas.

Presented thematically, MAM’s permanent collection exhibitions offer new ways of seeing and thinking about art and showcase Miami-based artists in an international context. In 2002, when MAM originated Miami Currents: Linking Community and Collection, showcasing the museum’s permanent collection just six years after its inception, the installation received glowing reviews from art professionals and the press alike.

"A step to greatness…," claimed The Miami Herald. Arte al Dia hailed it "…a momentous exhibition…daring aesthetic diversity, eloquent, dynamic and rigorously organized." ArtNews proclaimed it "…a benchmark exhibition."

Exhibitions

Looking at international art from the perspective of the Americas, MAM’s exhibition program brings together different cultural traditions as a reflection of the South Florida community and Miami’s unique location at the gateway of the Americas.

For every exhibition, MAM offers a range of educational activities and programs to engage audiences of all ages, including Visitors Galleries, spaces where museum goers can experience and reflect on the exhibitions through reading, writing, and hands-on activities. MAM also publishes Gallery Notes, free four-color brochures featuring essays by MAM curators.

MAM’s exhibition program is the primary vehicle through which MAM expresses its curatorial viewpoint and furthers Miami's growing national reputation as an innovative center for the arts. Since its inception in 1996, MAM has presented more than seventy exhibitions. Half of these were organized by MAM’s curatorial staff, making this program one of the most ambitious in the United States.

MAM's exhibitions are presented in three gallery spaces in three distinct series. MAM’s 10,000-square-foot Upper Level Gallery is the largest single exhibition space in South Florida, allowing MAM to generate and present large-scale exhibitions that otherwise would not be seen in the region. The 3,500 square-foot Plaza Level Gallery features MAM’s permanent holdings presented in thematic exhibitions that offer new ways of seeing and thinking about art and showcase Miami-based artists in an international context. MAM’s 1,500-square-foot New Work Gallery series presents never-before-exhibited or newly commissioned work by leading contemporary artists.
