MUDAM Luxembourg

MUDAM LUXEMBOURG
MUSÉE D’ART MODERNE
GRAND-DUC JEAN

Mudam is the foremost museum dedicated to contemporary art in Luxembourg, and strives to be attentive to every discipline and open to the whole world. The programme reflects current artistic trends and appreciates the emergence of new artistic practices on a national and international scale.

The building, which is the work of Sino-American architect, Ieoh Ming Pei, is a marvellous dialogue between the natural and historical environment. Built on the site of Fort Thüngen, midway between the city centre and the business district of Kirchberg, between historical vestiges and modernity, Mudam is located very close to the “Musée Dräi Eechelen”, the Philharmonie (by architect, Christian de Portzamparc) and the Place de l’Europe, designed by Ricardo Bofill. The building’s foundations follow the course of the former surrounding walls of the fortress. Erected in the “Park Dräi Eechelen”, planned by landscapists, Michel Desvigne and Christine Dalnoky, the building is characterised by the impact of the glass canopies and its perfect, honey-coloured limestone, finishing touches. The net surface area is 10,000 m2, which is laid out on three levels of 4,500 m2 dedicated to visits. Construction began in January 1999 and the museum opened on 1 July 2006.

The cultural project of Mudam is based on a conception of art seen at a poetical distance from the world. Its key words are freedom, innovation, a critical mind, and a place for humour. The programme favours every vector of expression while questioning our habits and our representations. It aims to capture no... [ Read all ]

Permanent Collection

MUDAM COLLECTION

The Mudam Collection bares witness to contemporary creation in all its technical and aesthetic forms, while remaining open to every other artistic discipline: painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, as well as design, fashion, graphic art and new media are all put on show. In this sense, alongside
artists such as Daniel Buren, Cy Twombly, Bernd and Hilla Becher, one finds Sophie Calle, Hussein Chalayan, Wim Delvoye and even Laure Tixier. Others who have also joined the Collection are artists who are more closely linked to the museum, either because they were discovered by its curators (Doris Drescher or Su-Mei Tse) or because they actively participated in affirming the museum’s identity (Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec, Martin Szekely, Constantin Grcic, Bert Theis or David Dubois). The Collection integrates works of international creation as much as it pays homage to the most significant local productions.

DAVID ALTMEJD . FLUX
Curator: Marie-Noëlle Farcy

“In the space between science fiction and reality, between fantastic zoology and scientific creativity,
David Altmejd accomplishes the feat of uniting the colourful magic of material, the endless fantasy of
forms and the poetry of ancient artistic skills in one and the same melting pot.” (Louise Déry)
In a career spanning nearly twenty years, the Canadian sculptor David Altmejd has produced a
wide variety of formally and thematically complex works in surprisingly diverse materials. The
artist’s interest in biology and architecture combines with a fascination with metamorphosis to
produce compellingly strange images reminiscent of the dreamlike or nightmarish worlds of David
Cronenberg and David Lynch, or the labyrinthine narratives of Jorge Luis Borges.

Altmejd’s works are characterised by a wealth of detail that lends formal momentum to individual
elements, which in some instances seem to originate from within the elements themselves.
Animated by inner forces and radiating a taut sense of energy, they are like snapshots of single
moments within a continual process of evolution. The natural forces illustrated in his sculptures
are counterbalanced by currents of energy (as epitomised by the gold chains in The Index). Altmejd’s
works unfold a disturbingly ambiguous narrative: even as they challenge viewers with unanswered
questions, the sculptures validate their feelings and interpretations.

From the beginning of his career as an artist, Altmejd has been using a wide variety of forms
and materials in his sculptures. The werewolf, a prominent motif in his work, appea...+ [ Read all ]

DESIGN OF MUDAM CAFÉ
Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec
Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec are designers with a functional but malicious aesthetic who have worked at the heart of the museum. Within an atrium with a clear floor that reflects light, they have created an autonomous structure for the café covered with a cameo sky of heat-formed textile tiles.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship and Fundraising - MUDAM Luxembourg

FINANCING THE MUSÉE D’ART MODERNE GRAND-DUC JEAN
The Fondation Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean is a private foundation mainly financed by the Luxembourgish State. The museum nevertheless is in need of additional funds in order to accomplish its mission.

MUDAM CLUB
Mudam invites you to become a member of Mudam Club. Its objective is to gather around the museum an ensemble of partners who support it, either by annual amounts granted to the programme, or by amounts meant to support specific projects. Our patrons can choose from different possibilities like a main partnership for an exhibition, the integral or partial financing of the educational programme or of artistic projects, etc.
With the creation of Mudam Club, the museum intends to open up to companies, but also wants to have its share in giving its members the opportunity to have direct access to the world of contemporary art.
