Musée Archéologique De Champagnole

The Museum was created in 1985 with the objective of being entirelydedicated to archeology. The two exhibition rooms have been rearranged in the last few years. They present recent Gallo-Roman and Merovingian finds in the Haute Vallee de l'Ain (High Valley of Ain).
The rich Gallo-Roman and Merovingian collections are the responsibilities of the Service for Conservation of Natural History, Archeology, and Ethnology in the Jura Department. A museography shows our ancestors' life in the High Valley of Ain, as well as their evolution from the 1st to the 7th century from social, cultural, and religious perspectives.

Permanent Collection

Recent Archeological Research for the Museum:

From 1965 to 1992, digging by benevolent teams emphasized an archeological heritage that had previously been ignored:

-the Gallo-Roman cluster in Saint-Germain-en-Montagne yielding meats reputed even to Rome;

-the Gallo-Roman sanctuary of Mont Rivel (Equevillon) and its traditional Celtic temples;

-the Merovingian cemetery of Crotenay, one of the biggest of the Franche-Comte region's necropolises;

-the Merovingian cemetery of Monnet-la-Ville , an example of cross-breeding between Gallo-Romans and the new Germanic migrants.
