Musée D'Art Moderne De Saint-Etienne Métropole

The Musée d‘Art Moderne de Saint Etienne Métropole, which is founded on the collections of the Musée d’Art et d’Industrie, became a part of the Saint Etienne Métropole agglomeration in January 2001.

It currently holds one of France’s most important collections of modern and contemporary art, with work from the beginning of the twentieth century to current trends. Constituted in 1947, the collection is one of the few which has witnessed western art’s complex transition into the industrial era, and whose policy of acquisition has been consistently focused on contemporary art, under the direction of the museum directors Maurice Allemand and later Bernard Ceysson.

Since the museum’s opening in 1987, its collection has included areas dedicated to design and photography, making it, along with the Musée national d’art moderne, one of the only museums to cover twentieth century art practice in all its range and diversity.

The museum has benefited from several donations, particularly those of Vicky Rémy, Francois and Ninon Robelin, and the Caisse des Dépots, and today gives particular attention to young artists and new media in its process of acquisition.

Permanent Collection

The museum’s collections of over 15 000 works bring together several vast domains of art practice, and includes deposits from the Musee National d’Art Moderne, the Fonds National d’Art contemporain and the Fonds Regional d’Art Contemporain Rhone-Alpes.
Painting, sculpture, drawing, design and installation are all well represented in the museum’s regularly renewed presentation.

The majority of the works in the collection belong to the twentieth century, from Claude Monet to the contemporary, such as young artist Wim Delvoye.

The museum’s photo library and documentation resources further enrich the collection.

Exhibitions

Since the opening in 1987, the museum has held a series of large scale historic exhibitions and of contemporary art exhibitions, accompanied by published catalogue.

Under Lorand Hegvi’s direction since 2003, the scope of acquisitions has expanded to international contemporary art, allowing for exhibitions such as Passage d’Europe, and Domicile. The exhibitions alternate between thematic and monographic focus, and between established and emerging artists, such as Gilbert & George, Roman Opalka, Gloria Friedman, Jean-Marc Bustamante, Yan Pei Ming, Georg Baselitz and Orlan.
