Museo De Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente houses an extraordinary collection of works donated by Esteban Vicente (Turégano, 1903 - Long Island, 2001), the only Spanish member of the first generation of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism in America. The exhibition of this Permanent Collection alternates with temporary exhibitions and cultural activities such as lectures, recitals and concerts.

The museum is located in the medieval palace of King Henry IV, of the Trastamara family, whose construction dates back to 1445. In addition to its five exhibition spaces, the visitor can also enjoy its Renaissance chapel with its Hispano-Moorish carved wooden ceiling, currently the auditorium of the museum, and the garden where Esteban Vicente’s ashes repose.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente has become an important point of reference for every visitor to Segovia, a city whose entire historical and cultural legacy has been designated by the UNESCO as a World Historical Heritage Site.

LA PALABRA IMAGINADA. DIALOGUES BETWEEN ART AND LITERATURE IN SPANISH ART.

La Palabra Imaginada revolves around the relationship that exists between the textual world (literature) and the visual (art), a fertile and complex dialogue that goes back to the origins of artistic language.
Visual arts and literature, or image and the word, have lived through a long idyll in which both worlds have complemented, fused and questioned each other, in a continuous and stimulating cooperation.

Education

The Museum’s educational programme is designed and adapted according to each group’s specific needs and explains different aspects of contemporary art in relation to the experiences of visitors. This is achieved through Guided Visits and Workshop Visits.

GUIDED VISITS
These visits, through a selection of works, allow the public to get closer to the general approach of the exhibition as well as specific aspects of contemporary art. The aim of the guided visits, apart from getting to know the exhibitions, is to generate interest and develop a critical spirit as well as giving visitors reading guidelines which give them autonomy to look at this and other exhibitions. The guided visits are participative and flexible activities adapted to the characteristics of each group.

WORKSHOP VISITS
This is a creative workshop additional to the Guided Visits in which participants can put into practice the ideas seen throughout the visit with special emphasis given to the recreational and experience-based aspects.

The Educational Programme is free and is geared towards a wide sector of the public.

Groups

Guided visits to the exhibitions allow the public to visit the gallery in a more active way, encouraging observation and analysis of the most significant works on display.
For the general public the visits take place on Thursdays at 18:00. No reservation is necessary.
For organizations visits must be reserved on (+34) 921 462 010 from Mondays to Fridays between 10:00 and 14:00. Visits last 60 minutes and take place between 6th March and 16th June from Tuesdays to Fridays 11:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 20:00.

Schools

CLASSROOM AND MUSEUM
This project relies on collaboration and exchanges with schools and is adapted to different age groups with different themes. Groups include students from Nursery, Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form Education.

3- to 8-year olds: Word Games
During a tour of the Museum we are able to see letters that compose words but also letters that draw, sculpt, illuminate, invent and construct… works of art whose essence is the word.
In the workshop we play with giving other uses to these letters and converting them into real works of art.

9- to 12-year olds: Words that Imagine
The tour allows us to address the different solutions that each artist has sought in order to compose a work of art, which is designed as much to be looked at as to be read and thought.
Afterwards, in the workshop we present the fascinating world of ‘caligramas’ or drawings with words.

13- to 18-year olds: Imagining with Words
The visit to the exhibition takes on questions such as the evolution of the relation between word and image in artistic creation, the subjectivity of language, the value of ‘other words’ etc. A closer look at a selection of works offers the opportunity to develop the capacity for observation, debate and criticism.
Back in the workshop we put into practice the knowledge acquired in the gallery by creating ‘caligramas’, drawing our visual poems with words.

Reservations: It is essential to make a booking beforehand by telephone on (+34) 921 462 010 from Mondays to Fridays between 10:00 and 14:00.
