Museo Del Patriarca

This magnificent museum is located in the Royal Seminary College of Corpus Christi. It was founded in 1583 by Saint Juan de Ribera who put together an excellent collection of paintings. The museum includes works by Juan de Juanes, Pedro de Campana, Fernando Yanez de la Almedina, El Greco (The worship of the Shepherds and The Meditation of Saint Francis and Friar Leon), Mariano Benlliure and Francisco Ribalta, among others. The atmosphere in the museum and the quality of the paintings make it one of the city's most charming.

San Juan de Ribera was an archbishop of Valencia in the 16th century, a grand figure in the Counter-Reformation, and a collector of art and literature. This college, founded by him, now houses some of his collection of 15th to 17th century paintings, all of them on religious themes, authentic and some even unrestored. As you walk in you can also view a pretty Renaissance cloister of the colegio, with the statue of the patriarch created by Mariano Benlliure.

Permanent Collection

The General Studies Room traces the history of the seminary through pieces of gold and silver work, documents, books, Bibles, a sculpture of the Virgin by Alonso Cano and paintings by Ribalta and Luis de Morales. One of the collection’s most valuable pieces is the coffer in which Thomas More kept the manuscript that he wrote during his captivity in the Tower of London.

The Duke of Calábria Room contains studies on music in the Renaissance period with several artistic and musical objects from the 16th and 17th century such as sheet music by Haydn.

Other highlights of the collection are paintings from the Valencia, Castille, Flemish and Italian schools from the 15th to the 19th centuries by artists such as Morales and El Greco, a cross in boxwood from Monte Athos dated to the 14th century, a Pedro de Campaña tapestry from the 16th century and a Benlliure sculpture.
