Museo Franz Mayer

Located in an eighteenth-century building facing onto the Plaza de la Santa Veracruz, the Franz Mayer Museum houses the finest collection of decorative arts in Mexico and presents temporary exhibitions of design and photography.

The permanent collection allows visitors to gain an appreciation of decorative arts from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries, with a variety of origins, materials and styles. The disciplines included in the collection are silverwork, ceramics, furniture, textiles, sculpture and painting, as well as pieces in feather art, lacquer, ivory, tortoiseshell, glass and enamel.

The museum is the result of the collector's spirit and philanthropic mentality of Franz Mayer, a German who adopted Mexican nationality. It also contains a library, open to the public, with a wide selection of antique and rare books, as well as eight hundred different editions of Don Quijote de la Mancha.

Besides its temporary exhibits, the Franz Mayer Museum also offers guided tours, courses, lectures, concerts, performances, children's workshops and special activities for members. There is a bookstore and gift shop, and a pleasant café in the cloister – one of the museum's key points of attraction because of its beauty.

Permanent Collection

The Franz Mayer museum collection consists of works of decorative art as well as sculpture and painting from Mexico, Europe and Asia dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
Other genres that complement the collection are ironwork, featherwork, lacquerwork, tortoiseshell, ivory, patents of nobility, print, glasswork and enamels.
Decorative art is an expression of the culture that produced it and informs us of a period's styles, fashions, changes in ornamentation, manufacturing processes and the artisans that took part in its creation.

FURNITURE
The Museum’s collection of furniture is one of the richest in Mexico, for its diversity of furniture types, the variety of countries of origins as well as the decorative and construction techniques that can be appreciated.
The Museum archive includes 710 pieces of furniture from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The majority of the pieces are Nouveau Hispanic although visitors can also see pieces of German, Chinese, French, Spanish, Philippine, Indian, Dutch, Indo-Portuguese, English, Italian and Portuguese origin.
Thanks to the plurality of furniture types and origins it is possible to analyse the complexity of commercial exchanges from the 16th to the 19th centuries in New Spain as well as changes in fashion and tastes within the world of domestic furnishings.

SILVERWARE
Comprised of a little more than 1,290 pieces from the 15th to the 19th centuries, the silverware collection of the Franz Mayer Museum has been recognized as one of the most important collections in Mexico.
Every piece shows the skilled craftsmanship in forging, casting and the different ways of using repoussé work, chiseling, graffito, and filigr...+ [ Read all ]
