Museo Gustavo De Maeztu

The Museo Gustavo de Maeztu is dedicated exclusively to the work of the artist who was born in Vitoria in 1887 but spent most of his life and died in Estella in 1947.

Based in the old palace of the Kings of Navarra, in the historical town of San Pedro, the 12th century building is the only example of civil Roman architecture in Navarra.

Following the complete restoration of the palace, the Museum was inaugurated in June 1991 and is based on the old studio of Maeztu in which the painter organised his work according to selective thematic criteria. Immersing himself into life in Estella the artist donated his collections to the city shortly before his death. His work centres on the feminine figure, portraits, still lifes and landscapes, executed according to three peculiar aspects of his work: the cosmopolitan, the picturesque and the marginal. Together with a selection of drawings of various genres and techniques, the Museum also shows Maeztu’s research into the world of art, alluding to his literary streak.

The permanent collection is distributed across nine rooms of the Museum. There are a further two rooms for temporary exhibitions, one exhibition space, a library and archive centre. The Museum also has a space for courses, conferences and diverse activities.

Permanent Collection

PAINTINGS
There are three stages in Maeztu’s work. The first one, up to 1919, shows Maeztu’s essence as well as his statements. The second, between 1919 and 1930, translates the desire to smooth out all elements. In the third, up to 1947, there is a dominance of dogmatism with a touch of genius.

DRAWINGS AND ENGRAVINGS
On the walls of the second floor there is a large number of selected drawings, sketches and several lithographs, done between the years 1921 and 1936, intended for wall decorations.

FERNANDO PENNETIER AND IRATXE MONTERO
30th March to 6th May 2007
Fernando Pennetier studied in the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. He developed a style of painting that can be defined as lyrical realism based on the faded perfection of drawing and a harmonious and sober sense of colour.
Iratxe Montero displays her recent works in an intimate exhibition, full of subtle lyricisms. Her painting is an accumulation of objects in unstable environments and precarious daily scenes.

EUGENIO ORTIZ – PATRICK MICHAEL FITZGERALD.
23rd February to 25th March 2007
This exhibition featured the two artists together for the first time, showing both recent work and previous work which had never been exhibited.
