Museo Xul Solar

The Pan Klub Foundation – Xul Solar Museum, is an institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the work of the Argentine artist Alejandro Xul Solar, its main task being to develop and promote culture in its different aspects.

Created in 1986 by Micaela (Lita) Cadenas - the artist's wife - and Natalio J. Povarché - Xul Solar's marchand – the museum follows original plans made by Xul for the Pan Klub at the end of the 1930s.

The museum opened on April 13th 1993. The works that are exhibited were selected by Xul Solar himself for the Pan Klub. These works constitute the permanent exhibition of the museum, along with objects, sculptures and documents that belong to his personal archive. Furthermore the Foundation preserves the personal dwelling of the artist which also houses his library with some 3,500 volumes.

The museum building was designed by the Architect Pablo T. Beitía usingstates, associations and images taken from the artistic production of Xul Solar's work. Amongst the prizes awarded, in 1998 the building was selected as semi-finalist for the Mies Van der Rohe Prize for Latin America and in 2003 won the “Decade Award prize

Permanent Collection

The entire museum space holds 86 works by Xul Solar in permanent exhibition. There are also some showcases which display various artistic objects created by the artist, as well as testimonial documents, different publications, scripts and letters.

The painter's dwelling has been kept intact and visible and is integrated into a promenade. There, thanks to the Pan Klub, his library, the furniture, rooms and ambience have become the vital centre for the philanthropic and transcendent purposes of Xul Solar for Buenos Aires.

OLIVERIO GIRONDO. HOMAGE 1967-2007
October 16th to December 15th 2007

This exhibition is devoted to Oliverio Girondo (1890- 1967) as a homage on the 40th anniversary of his death.
The exhibition's purpose is to show other sides to Oliverio which traditionally are not taken into account, since the general approach to Girondo and his work is, almost exclusively, within the literary field. Thus we emphasise: his bibliophile aspect, through de luxe editions of his books; his relationship with artists such as Pedro Figari, Lino Enea Spilimbergo and Emilio Pettoruti; his aspect as art collector, interested in pre-Columbian and Oriental art; his relationship with the vanguard of the 20's (presenting an exceptional set of first editions books); his activity as publisher particularly as one of the founders of the Sudamericana publishing company in 1939, represented by some unpublished material, which shows the association between the editor and the artists, completely unknown today.
The exhibition also introduces an unknown set of 10 watercolours painted by Girondo (only a few of them were reproduced in publications of that time), and the famous puppet (of almost 3 meters of height) with which Girondo walked around Buenos Aires to promote his book Espantapájaros (Scarecrow) in 1932.

Finally, taking into account the context of his book En la masmédula, his friendship with Enrique Molina, Aldo Pellegrini and the group of Poesía Buenos Aires during the 50's is recreated.

A catalogue published jointly with Malba - Fundación Costantini has been issued. It includes essays by Patricia Artundo, Gonzalo Aguilar y Edgardo Krebs, a chronology prepared by Artundo and Martín G...+ [ Read all ]
