Museu De La Xocolata (The Chocolate Museum)

The Chocolate Museum is the first museum of its kind in Catalonia. Opened in 2000 in a former convent, its creation was the initiative of the Barcelona Confectionary Guild which intended to promote the Museum as part a determination to innovate and modernise the sector based on the traditions of the world of confectionery.

The Museum takes you through the discovery of the cocoa bean by New World explorers, its commercialization, and chocolate as an art form. Every Easter it is the venue for the annual ‘mona’ competition. ‘Monas’, a Catalan invention, are elaborate chocolate sculptures, often of famous buildings, people, or cartoon characters.
