Permanent Collection

European Impressionists and Modern Masters, such as Georges Braque, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre Auguste Renoir are represented. American art from 1900 to the present features works of Stuart Davis, Edward Hopper, John Marin, Robert Motherwell, Georgia O'Keeffe, Andy Warhol, George Bellows and Jackson Pollock. The Museum also owns an extensive collection of works on paper and a rich body of sculpture, which includes examples by Jean Arp, Constantine Brancusi, Pablo Picasso, and Alexander Calder. The Chinese collection offers superb examples of carved jades, bronze vessels, early ceramics, decorated porcelains and Buddhist sculptures. Today’s most revered and history’s most innovative photographers are featured in the Norton’s photography collection: from Thomas Demand, Cindy Sherman, Candida Höfer, and Elger Esser to Clarence H. White, Walker Evans, Lewis Hine, and Man Ray.

Exhibitions

In addition to the Norton Collection, a diverse schedule of special exhibitions will be on view throughout the year.

BIG Picture
July 7 - September 23, 2007

Highlighting photographic donations and acquisitions since 2006, BIG Picture reveals the growing trend in contemporary art for photographs to be big, really big. Over the last two decades advancing photographic technologies has allowed artists and photographers to make photographic prints that rival the scale (and impact) of paintings. From Thomas Demand’s recreation of an unlikely museum accident or Reiner Leist’s isolated image from his ongoing series of over 2400 views from his New York City apartment window, to the beautiful landscapes of Elger Esser and the stunning portrait by Chuck Close, BIG Picture reveals the amazing diversity of approaches and the seemingly endless possibilities of the photographic image in the 21st century.

Autumn Splendor
September 8 – December 16, 2007

Autumn Splendor coincides with one of China's favorite holidays, the Mid-Autumn Festival. On the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, September 25, the moon is reputed to be brighter and fuller than any other night. Family and friends gather for moon viewing parties. This elegant installation offers a sensational opportunity to focus on Chinese brush paintings featuring the moon and other symbols of the fall season. For example, Autumn Moon at Lake Dongting (1903) is a poignant riverscape created at the end of China's dynastic era—the Qing dynasty, which fell in 1911.
