Real Fundación De Toledo-Museo Victorio Macho

The Real Fundación de Toledo holds part of the collection bequeathed by the sculptor Victorio Macho within the museum that bears his name. The museum itself is located in the artist’s former house and studio, built in 1953 on the promontory known as Roca Tarpeya.

Upon the artist’s death he bequeathed a very important selection of his works along with his house to the Spanish people. The Fundación Victorio Macho was created to oversee the legacy. In 1967 the museum was inaugurated but due to a series of problems that complicated its maintenance, was closed down in 1984.

Following a long and complicated process the Fundación Victorio Macho entered into agreement with the Real Fundación de Toledo in 1998 with the latter assuming responsibility for the work of the sculptor. The result of this process was the renovation of the Roca Tarpeya site in order to accommodate it for use as the Fundación’s headquarters and finally the re-inauguration of the museum.

Permanent Collection

The museum’s permanent collection holds outstanding sculptures such as Autorretrato a los diecisiete años, La Madre, el Torso Gitano, el Danielillo and el Marinero vasco, portraits of personalities such as Unamuno, Marañón, Cajal and Pasionaria, as well as sketches of the great monuments that the sculptor created in Spain and America. There is an interesting representation of drawings which completes the artist’s vision including self-portraits, a series of rural workers and female nudes.

The Crypt holds the sculpture of his brother Marcelo lying down, one of Macho’s most famous works. It also contains a terracotta model of Cristo del Otero, the Cristo de Los Corrales de Buelna, bronze reliefs of the Monumento a Grau and models of his monuments.

The garden continues to house the same objects that the artist exhibited while he lived here, pieces that characterise the traditional image of Roca Tarpeya. Highlights include a grandiose Eva de América and La Máscara y La Cariátide, on the balustrade.
