Reykjavik Art Museum

Founded in 1973, the Reykjavík Art Museum is the largest visual art institution in Iceland. Its mission to present contemporary art in its many manifestations is carried out through diverse programs at the museum’s three venues: Hafnarhus, Kjarvalsstadir, and Asmundarsafn. Architecture has been a part of the museum programs since 1993.

Permanent Collection

The Reykjavik Art Museum has three collections of works by individual artists: Asmundur Sveinsson, Johannes S. Kjarval and Erró. The Museum is also in charge of the General art collection of the city of Reykjavik as well as most of the outdoor sculptures.

A series of projects by young Icelandic artists will be featured in the D-Gallery of Hafnarhus.

Folk Tales - Icelandic stories from the oral tradition

An exhibition of works by Icelandic draughtsmen who took on the task of illustrating folk tales from the oral tradition.

The entrance ticket is valid for three days for all three museums.

Adults: kr 500
Senior Citizens: kr 250
Disabled: kr 250
Groups (10 or more): kr 250
Younger than 18 years: free
Thursdays free


Opening hours

The Museums are open every day from 10:00-17:00.


Getting there

The Reykjavik Art Museum is situated at three different locations in the city; at Asmundarsafn, Hafnarhus and Kjarvalsstadir. The Reykjavik Art Museum´s office is at the Hafnarhus.
