Sala Rekalde

The Sala Rekalde is a space that depends on the Culture Department of the Executive Council of Biscay and is dedicated to promoting and raising awareness of contemporary artistic practice.

Ever since Rekalde was set up in 1991, it has specialised in looking at contemporary art produced in Spain and abroad through initiatives that reflect the debates that are the focus of art today.

Rekalde sees itself as an environment in which it is possible to draw together all the key aspects related to the meaning of artistic production, the various ways in which art is presented and represented, and its ability to enter into dialogue with different publics.

Rekalde is divided into two spaces, enabling it to fulfil its resolve to approach its various undertakings - including exhibitions, projects to present certain works, debates, video screenings, talks and publications - at the appropriate pace. It is an institution committed to learning through experience and aims to serve as a forum for all those who want to take part in the debate on the various languages of culture.

Exhibitions

The Sala Rekalde holds two exhibition spaces; the main space and the newly launched activities space.

'THE MAIN SPACE'
The main space fosters exhibitions from both national and international artists with a proven background such as Doug Aitken, Phil Collins, Manu Muniategiandikoetxea, Mark Lewis, Sharon Lockhart, Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, Sergio Prego and Azucena Vieites.

'THE ABSTRACT CABINET'
‘The Abstract Cabinet’ is a notion taken from the title of a project by Lissitzky in 1927 and serves as an umbrella title for the series of activities that we want to hold in the newly remodelled lobby. With his cabinet, Lissitzky’s intention was to ‘invent’ a room capable of turning the ‘spectator’ into an ‘active subject’ through the careful presentation of the works within it, the architectural elements and the light. This utopia identifies the need to keep this goal as a constant in our sphere of work, hence the need to ‘activate’ a new space in Rekalde, a space that is an extension to the main gallery, increasing not just its surface area but also its ability to satisfy other needs that may take the form of an exhibition, a discourse (gatherings, talks, etc.) or an event.
