Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

The Stedelijk Museum has closed its doors on October 9, 2011, for the final phase of construction. The museum expects the grand reopening to be in 2012, after the completion of the renovation and expansion project.

Until the reopening, the museum presents Temporary Stedelijk 3: Stedelijk @, a program that includes performances, film screenings, lectures, discussions, music, book launches, interactive happenings and other events. Stedelijk @ is being developed in close collaboration with various cultural institutions in Amsterdam, such as the Concertgebouw, the Appel arts centre, the Rijksakademie, the Ateliers, SKOR, SMBA and many others. For details of the full program, see: www.stedelijk.nl.

Temporary Stedelijk 2:

The Stedelijk Museum continues its temporary program with Temporary Stedelijk 2, which focuses on the renowned collection of modern and contemporary art and design. Selections from the collections are presented in innovative ways within the current conditions of the building. Making Histories: Changing Views of the Collection highlights the breadth of the museum’s collection, featuring works from Matisse, Malevich and Yves Klein.

The Temporary Stedelijk at the Stedelijk Museum
28 August 2010 – 9 January 2011
While work continues on the renovation and expansion of the Stedelijk Museum, the museum hosts a unique program in the restored, historical building. The program is called The Temporary Stedelijk and presents several exhibitions of contemporary art accompanied by education programs and special events.
In Taking Place artists make use of the building in an experimental way, through newly commissioned site-specific works, architectural interventions and performances. On the wall opposite to Karel Appel’s mural, a new work by Lawrence Weiner is featured, a gift by the Friends of the Stedelijk Museum.
Another highlight is the exhibition Monumentalism—History and National Identity in Contemporary Art. The work of 19 artists demonstrates the relevance of the theme, among them Yael Bartana, Hala Elkoussy, Iris Kensmil, Job Koelewijn, Gert Jan Kocken, Renzo Martens, and Barbara Visser. Some works will be presented for the first time.
