Van Abbemuseum

The Van Abbemuseum is one of the leading museums for modern and contemporary art in Europe. Since the opening in 1936, we have shown many acclaimed exhibitions and built an extensive, internationally renowned collection of more than 2700 works of art. The collections reputation is due to the quality of the individual works of art, among which are masterpieces by Picasso, Chagall, El Lissitzky, Beuys, Weiner, Gordon and McCarthy.
In the Oudbouw (old building) temporary exhibitions exploring topics of general political and social concern alongside focused presentations of individual artists are held. In the Nieuwbouw (new building), a radical new approach called Plug In has been developed to exhibit the famous collection. The Nieuwbouw is also the location of Living Archive, a series of documentary exhibitions based on the museum archive.
With the renovation of the historic museum building, dating from 1936, by architect Kropholler, and its integration into the spectacular new wing, designed by architect Abel Cahen, the Van Abbemuseum is moving with the times in the museum world and responding to the growing expectations of the public. Cahen's distinctive design makes a notable contribution to Dutch museum architecture. The museum will also have a whole range of new facilities, created by the Belgian designer Maarten van Severen. These include an auditorium and an education centre, which will accommodate a wide spectrum of public events. The library, in its striking new home, ranks among the leading scholarly centres for the visual arts in the Netherlands. Equally inviting are the new restaurant with its unique location and the specialist museum shop.

Permanent Collection

Cubism: Georges Braque, Marc Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Piet Mondriaan, Pablo Picasso.
El Lissitzky and contemporaries

The Van Abbemuseum collection covers a period of about 100 years. In total the museum now owns roughly 2700 works of art, of which 1000 are works on paper, 700 are paintings and 1000 are sculptures, installations and video works. The collections international reputation is due to the fine quality of the individual works of art, some of which are world famous. In the strip below you can see illustrations of a number of works from the collection. They have been taken from the 100-year period covered by the collection and put in chronological order. More information about the works in the collection is to be found in the museum library.

Plug In

Re-imagining the collection

ongoing until April 2009

Plug In is the title of the new approach to exhibiting the collection at the Van Abbemuseum. Over the next three years, the presentation of the museum's collection will be constantly re-imagined through a series of independent, unitary exhibitions in the galleries of the new building.

In April 2006 the first ‘episodes’ of Plug In were shown – a new series of collection displays put together by guest curators, including artists. Each museum space has its own independent, themed display as well as its own time span. By sequentially changing the spaces, fresh narratives, surprising links and revealing contrasts are constantly being invoked. Plug In refers not only to the spaces, which can be fitted and taken apart like a box of building blocks, but invites visitors to ‘plug in’ – according to need and interest – and set their imagination alight.

Sponsorship

Stichting Promoters Van Abbemuseum

A foundation of corporate museum patrons, the Stichting Promoters Van Abbemuseum, brings together businesses that give financial support to the museum for its major acquisitions. Their annual donations amount to more than a third of the museum's budget for new acquisitions. The foundation has already enabled the purchase of several key works. Notable examples are Tapis de Sable by Marcel Broodthaers, Proun P23, no. 6 by El Lissitzky, and the bronze Listening Figure with Balcony by Juan Muñoz.
