Walter Runeberg Collection

Walter Runeberg (1838-1920) was one of the most important Finnish sculptors of his time. The collection includes more than 100 of his works, including the drafts for his monumental works of art, plaster sculptures, and a large portrait gallery.

The artist's father was Finland's national poet, Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877), who also wrote the words for the Finnish national anthem, "Maamme" (our Country), lived with his family in Porvoo from for 40 years, starting in 1837. This home, located beside the sculpture collection, has been a museum since 1882. He worked as a lecturer at Borgå Gymnasium (Porvoo College) and lived at several addresses, the last of which was in the Empire district. He settled there with his wife Fredrika and his six children in 1852, living there untill his death in 1877.

Permanent Collection

The collections in the Runeberg home are exceptionally well preserved. The works of art, the hunting weapons in the ketunnahkakamari (Foxskin room), and the porcelain in the cupboards all serve as excellent reminders of the everyday and festive life of the Runeberg family. The chimes of the grandfather clock mark the passage of time, but Fredrika's beloved plants still bloom throughout the house. In the summer, the scents of roses, mock orange, and fruit trees waft throughout the garden.

The monumental works and portraits of Walter Runeberg, who worked in Rome and Paris, represent idealistic Classicism. The statue Walter Runeberg created of his father, J. L. Runeberg, is located in Helsinki, and there is a smaller version in Porvoo's Runeberg Park.
