ZDB

Contemporary art center located in Lisbon presenting temporary exhibitions. Also programming music, performance, dance and theater shows.

ZDB is an independent structure created in 1994, which occupies a unique place in what concerns production and promotion of up and coming and contemporary art in Portugal. Its initial goals are maintained: to stimulate culture and contemporary thought inducing senses; to guarantee art production to the artists, physical conditions for research; to call attention to artistic objects in several areas and intersections, nurturing experimentation, innovation and exploration in emerging languages in arts. In these years ZDB has been growing and affirming itself in the cultural panorama in its several branches and areas, working today as a space for artistic legitimatization and as a products platform for curators in cultural centers and both national and international festivals, who seek renovation in contemporary arts.

Exhibitions

João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva "For a Transitory Science of the Indiscernible:
Abissology" a ZDB-produced exhibition in Lisbon (Galeria do Torreão Nascente).
Comprised of works created in different platforms, namely 22 films - between 30 seconds and 13 minutes long which total more than an hour and a half -, glass, bronze and bone sculptures, installation and photography, this
exhibition introduces a new fictional model which is the result of the artistic practice of Paiva and Gusmão: Abissology, or the science that studies the abyss. This model is reflected into a fiction which is concerned with the literary composition of a specific science of the bodies, designed accordingly to the phenomenological/ontological condition of the visible minimum – what is almost unseen or what has almost no existence to a beholder.
