| Description: | For a show responding to Mike Kelley’s death, I recalled the first work of his I ever saw; a vitrine displaying coathangers reportedly straightened and used to open car door mechanisms in Liverpool.
The Canny’un is a recreation of a product marketed in the US designed for the same function, which I have formed into a coathanger. The accompanying screen shows an unedited found advert for this product, showing its intended use.
A viewer is obliged to question the origins of both the ambiguous sculpture and video, versions of the same form, making reference to an oblique canonical artwork. |
