Charles Ogilvie

Born in United Kingdom. Lives in: London
Royal College of Art Sculpture

How hot is a nuclear reactor core? Would Westminster Abbey fit inside Dungeness power station? How close is the moon to my studio when the spring tide hits Battersea bridge? My research interests include the landscape and industrial heritage of the UK, particularly the postwar civil nuclear fleet and new energy sectors. These mysterious beacons of industry provide a powerful vocabulary with which to explore mankind's search to substantiate his place in the Universe. I have just been awarded a AHRC studentship to fund a practice based D.Phil at the Ruskin looking at John Latham and the development of his cosmology in the post war decade.

Work of art I would like to make

A series of brass telescopes mounted on brackets, tripods and theodolites are located throughout the gallery with trig points and brass and bronze survey markers set into the walls and floor.

The scopes various views reveal the trajectory of the planet Mars across the gallery wall. This cosmological drawing is connected to the geography of the space by a long periscope that exits through a window and peers across London at the tip of the Shard - a new star in the constellation of the city.
