Yvonne Yiwen FengBorn in China. Lives in: London Slade School of Fine Art
I make drawings from images of sexual postures to establish the initial direction of my work, as the sensuality and movement that the female body displays in lovemaking goes hand in hand with my interest in gestural mark-making. This interest in mark-making and the metaphorical imaginary space also has its origin in traditional Chinese ink-wash paintings which require minimal touch just enough to trigger form, texture and feeling and aim to capture the psyche beyond representing the subject.
My practice now inquires into the idea of transforming concrete images into painterly forms that convey atmosphere and sensuality.

Work of art I would like to makeExploring the tension between figuration and abstraction is central in my practice. In the process of painting, I fill the canvas with minimal controlled brushstrokes at the same time authorise the paint itself to take on its own form. When abstraction gradually takes over the pictorial clues, the painting opens up a stage that anticipates happenings and adventures, which is a space that the viewers can project their feelings and imaginations.
Currently, I have an increasing intention on the control of the explicitness of the figure, the articulation of mark-making and the determination behind the existence of abstract forms. There are interesting and dramatic contrasts in my recent paintings: suggestive figural forms versus energetic abstract marks, the romantic aesthetics versus the grotesque/ cartoon language. I attempt to challenge the tension between harmony and disharmony by further exploring these contrastive elements in painting.
I also want to challenge myself in breaking down the large scale which I work comfortably on by creating a series of paintings in medium size focussing on the richness of surface and the visual elements that contribute to the sensuality. |
