Gabriella Boyd

Born in United Kingdom. Lives in: London
Glasgow School of Art

I construct invented interiors through paint in order to explore the merging boundaries of literal and psychological spaces. These fictional spaces depict guarded and often private dwelling places yet their uneasy atmospheres are balanced with a twisted joyfulness. I use colour and form to guide the eye of the viewer through non-realist spaces. My interest in the containment of people is stimulated by the Surrealist attempt to detonate the divisions between our inner and outer worlds. By stripping the figure and its context of all recognisable rational connections, Surrealism simplifies their relationship to a purely formal level.

Work of art I would like to make

My working method is to build theatrical installations placing furniture and figures in unexpected conjunctions. I then use my studies and photomontages of these staged interiors as a starting point for my paintings.

Previously influenced by the specifics of Glasgow interiors – their high ceilings and spaciousness – I am keen to explore how my transition to London and its inner spaces will affect my practice.

My work is informed by how much our perception of the figure can be changed through altering the space in which it is placed. An environment can potentially humanize or depersonalize a figure.

Being chosen for New Sensations would give me the opportunity to develop these ideas and continue working on large-scale canvases.
