Hazel Moore

Born in Ireland. Lives in: Glasgow
Glasgow School of Art

Coming from a design background and graduating with a degree in fine art my work incorporates the medium of performance, video and print challenging conventional ways of thinking and prohibitions taboos established by religious or social customs. Another important part of my work is focused on performance re-enactment. I am interested in the language of symbols. My degree show work for example explored the iconic Sheela-na-Gig. A conflicting symbol originally of fertility and later also of promiscuity. The Sheela-na-Gig motif throughout my degree show work celebrates the female form. My work confronts the audience’s own perceptions, encouraging them to not only interpret the work in front of them but also reflect their own reaction to the work.

Work of art I would like to make

My plan for the new sensation work is to develop the initial ideas from my degree show further. The new work, a large-scale indoor soft furnishing in the shape of a vulva will be created in order to change the appearance of a traditional taboo into a celebration of the female form. The labyrinthine character of the object will be explored by the visitors of the exhibition as well as during a performance. Reusing the Sheela-na-Gig wedding dress the performance will climax in an explosion of vulva shaped confetti, further enveloping the audience in this celebration.
