I have completed my BA at Manchester Metropolitan University and recently received the Basil Alkazzi scholarship to study an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art. My painting has an inherent, self-critical instability. It does not take its status for granted and consequently it swings schizophrenically between concepts and styles. My lack of commitment to one particular path is an attempt not only to understand the possibilities and limitations of making a painting now, but also the difficulties of communicating anything in our increasingly unreadable present.

Work of art I would like to make

The series of paintings “What we talk about when we talk about love” from my degree show are about the experience of mortality and medicine. The responsive activity of painting enables a dialogue between the paint and the matter: whereby there is instability in the images desperate status between potential and destruction.

The affirmation and denial of form in the gesso pieces through combinations of languages and removal of paint begins to suggest the idea of a psychological space, while the universal visual cue of hospital equipment has the ability to invoke a subjective emotional response.

Hospitals are where powerful human interactions happen; the use of colour and fluid mark suggests this humanity, contradicting how we aesthetically experience the clinical setting. The paintings depict an environment that is not predictable; instead, they describe an alternate, impossible reality, in which we cannot visit, be treated or reassured.

If I had the opportunity to make a new work for the Sensation’s exhibition, I would make a painting: it would deal with similar ideas to that of my degree show, but I would like to further interrogate the decisions I intuitively make and think more consciously about the vibration of compositional forms.
