My portraits in this exhibition are intended to provide a snapshot of my relationship with the subject of the portrait. I used expressive colours in the backgrounds of these images to evoke a certain lively mood and character. I allow the viewer to see through the painted subject to the colours beneath, suggesting that what we see of a person on the surface may be an incomplete view of their true character. The portraits are also about family and the relationships between family members; the similar range of colours used in my portraits of my Grandpa and Joe (my brother) show their shared kinship. |
