Oil on Canvas. 145 X 112 cm
This large piece is based on watercolour paintings I did showing views of ruins and buildings I saw on a school trip to Rome. I used thin layers of oil paint mixed with thinning agents to create a layered effect in this painting; a similar technique to the smaller scale watercolour work. The painting is essentially about memory; some parts of the image are recognisable, whilst others remain indistinct, just as our memories of the past, or indeed the physical remains of Ancient Rome, decay into ambiguity. The bright colours of the piece, however, suggest that the past has a vibrant relevance of its own. |
