Lifejacket

Lifejacket
Photo Description:
Materials: Found objects. Photography On choosing the theme ‘Family Gatherings’ I became interested in the idea of the ‘baggage’ that is bestowed upon us at birth (consisting of inherited features and characteristics, heritage and history.) over which we have no control. I also explored the idea of inherited property, and how what we do or don’t inherit can affect us. I wanted to represent this ‘baggage’ physically, by first creating a drawing for my exam showing someone struggling with plastic bags filled with clutter; possessions of mine which have built up over the years, stored in drawers and rarely, if ever, looked at, but with which it is difficult for me to part. For my final piece, I decided to extend this physical representation of ‘family baggage’ by photographing myself wearing a jacket that is slowly overtaken by the same clutter, showing the impact that this has on the jacket and the wearer.
