Transmutation

Transmutation
Photo Description: Transmutation Acrylic, Oil, Linen 3.5ft x 4ft 2014 Place and structure are the focus of my work. As the universe expands, and the earth moves within it, place becomes increasingly difficult to define. Though a physical place is relative, it is possible to find comfort through a sense of place. Using art, I explore the concept of position within space and its confines. Paintings are composed by combining the 11 nets of the cube to form the image. Nets, two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects determine the extent of three-dimensional space. The image created by the nets limit, separate and contain the linen while creating a structure for the viewer to navigate. The perimeter of the combined nets forms an image, which alludes to the horizon and the spaces we inhabit. In this series, I also depict the effects of time on space. By layering images in the two-coloured painting, it is possible to see how old structures and environments play a role in shaping the new. It is through these paintings that I explore how spaces change over time.
