Shower Screen

Shower Screen
Photo Description:
This oil painting by Beth explores the relationship between viewer and viewed. Inspired initially by the Velazquez's 'Rokeby Venus, Beth challenged the role of the male gaze by making further reference to Gerhard Richter's 'Betty' and the idea of our view of a woman being obscured/interrupted. By having her model pressing against the surface of the shower screen, Beth alludes to the picture surface as a 'screen' onto another, imagined world. Is the model trying to escape it?
